Water jet cutting is the use of nozzles to generate high-pressure water jets carrying fine abrasive particles for cutting. This method is very effective for cutting both metallic and non-metallic materials. The process uses large-capacity pumps, and the demand for water and electricity is very large. This method can cut stainless steel (>100mm thick gauge) without creating a heat affected zone (HAZ) and without changing the metallurgical structure of the austenitic stainless steel workpiece. Although the water jet cut quality is good, but when the cutting section is thick, the groove angle of the cutting surface is larger. Cutting the stainless steel sheet by this method is not economical, but by stacking a plurality of austenitic stainless steel sheets, a plurality of stainless steel workpieces can be cut at a time.

plasma cutting

Plasma cutting is the most commonly used method for cutting all grades of austenitic stainless steel plates with a thickness of more than 25mm. The design of the plasma gun significantly improves the accuracy and quality of the cut, making it an ideal process for cutting straight lines or special shapes. In some cases, the cut quality of plasma cutting is very good and can be used directly or as a welded joint without further processing. Since plasma cutting does involve high temperature and local melting of metal, the corrosion resistance of the cut is reduced. Portable plasma cutting machine can cut stainless steel shaped workpiece or sample. Underwater plasma cutting stainless steel reduces smoke and dust.

In plasma cutting, the grade and cutting thickness of austenitic stainless steel are important factors that must be considered when selecting plasma gas. Avoid the use of oxygen-containing gas, because oxygen will cause the formation of a chromium oxide layer on the surface layer, thereby consuming chromium below the surface layer and reducing corrosion resistance. The cut surface was slightly discolored, indicating chromium oxidation. If severe discoloration occurs, subsequent pickling or edging is required to restore corrosion resistance. The certified purity of the nitrogen auxiliary gas is at least 99.95% and the maximum oxygen content is 200ppm. In addition to N2, other gases commonly used in plasma cutting of austenitic stainless steel are mixed gases of N2 and H2 or Ar and H2.

Variables such as gas flow rate, arc current, nozzle design, and cutting speed all affect the width, shape, and quality of the cut. For different grades and thicknesses of austenitic stainless steel, the specific recommendations of the plasma cutting equipment manufacturer should be consulted.

In laser cutting, a laser beam melts the material while a nitrogen jet blows the melt away from the cut. Nitrogen prevents oxidation and avoids loss of corrosion resistance. When using laser cutting stainless steel, the nitrogen pressure is greater than the oxygen pressure when cutting carbon steel. In order to effectively blow away the molten metal, the nitrogen pressure needs to increase with the increase of the thickness of the austenitic stainless steel material. Compared with plasma cutting, laser cutting speed is faster, the incision width is narrow, and the incision quality is high. It can usually be used directly without further processing of the incision. Compared with plasma cutting, the disadvantage of laser cutting is that the thickness of cutting stainless steel is limited. Current laser cutting equipment can only cut austenitic stainless steel with a maximum thickness of no more than 12mm. The laser cutting machine can cut high-performance austenitic stainless steel and standard austenitic stainless steel into final size without additional machining. The difference in laser cutting characteristics between high-performance and standard austenitic stainless steels is small.
